William Speirs Bruce was born in London of Scottish parents in 1867. He was educated at Norfolk County School, England and enrolled as a medical student at the University of Edinburgh, where renowned Scottish physicists, chemists and oceanographers supervised him. The Scottish National Antarctic Expedition, 1902-1904 (leader William Speirs Bruce) set up a meteorological station on Laurie Island, South Orkney Islands. This station was later transferred to the Argentine government who continue to make observations there to this day. Alexander Lindsey ran the station for the 1909-1910 season.
